Welcome to
The Grand Rapids Players
Mission Statement ~
“To strengthen, enhance and perpetuate community by initiating,
sponsoring, providing and promoting theatre performing arts and
education in the community and surrounding areas.”
Purpose ~
The purpose of the Grand Rapids Players is to promote the enjoyment and
understanding of drama through community participation in dramatic
activities.
Our History ~
The history of the Grand Rapids Players began in the 1950’s with the
local chapter of the American Association of University Women. This
organization sought to involve area children in theatre and children’s
literature. This evolved into the formation of the Grand Rapids
Children’s Theater. This company provided children’s theatre to the
community for almost 10 years. These productions were well received by
area residents and the organization was encouraged to expand the company
to include adults. As a result, in August 1965, Olga Johnson, Flora
Zigmund, and Betty Redding formed the Grand Rapids Players. The Players
became one of the longest running community theatre companies in
Minnesota.
During the early years, the Players produced non-musical productions.
However, the desire to produce larger drama and musicals led to a
decision to provide two performances a year. If you visit our past
productions page you will see that the Players have produced a number of
interesting and challenging plays.
In 1995 the Players purchased a building to house the expanding sets and
costumes that have accumulated over the years. This building is big
enough to build sets in, rehearse and hold our monthly board meetings.
We continue to grow and expand on many creative ideas that include
numerous talented community members that wish to be active in the
performance arts.
